Appellant Norman Woodford and an accomplice robbed a Hooks drug store in Indianapolis. During the robbery, an Indianapolis police officer and Woodfords accomplice engaged in a gun battle. Both were killed. Subsequently, in November 1976, Woodford pled guilty to the murder of a police officer. Ind. Code Â§ 35-13-4-1(b)(1) (Burns 1975). He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Five years and eleven months later in December 1982, Woodford filed a petition for post-conviction relief challenging the validity of the guilty plea. After an evidentiary hearing, the trial court found in favor of the State on the issue of laches and denied Woodfords petition.
